HCJB’s first broadcast almost didn’t happen…

Eric and Ann Williams were stationed in the sheep shed watching over the transmitter during HCJB’s inaugural radio broadcast. But that first broadcast almost did not happen.

It had taken nearly two months to get the station and the tiny 200-watt transmitter operational. Clarence had wanted a 5000-watt commercially-built transmitter, but he couldn’t raise enough funds to buy one.

Radio experts had told Clarence to stay away from the mountains and the equator. So Clarence decided to have Eric, a former CBS engineer build an experimental transmitter that would allow them to test different frequencies.

The experimental transmitter however was rather temperamental. The day before HCJB’s first scheduled broadcast, a mercury vapor rectifier tube burnt out and they had no more spares left.

Clarence drove to Riobamba to see if Carlos Cordovéz might have what they needed. Cordovéz graciously gave Clarence a replacement tube from his own transmitter so that HCJB’s first broadcast could happen as planned.
